The first, Eid al-Fitr, has now taken place, celebrating the end of the daily fasting through the month of Ramadan, and the start of the next month, Shawwal. As part of the celebrations, more than , Muslims gathered in Small Heath Park for the Celebrate Eid event - the largest of its kind in Europe.

Those who followed an apparent Saudi Arabia moon sighting held Eid on Tuesday, June 4, while others followed clearly visible UK sightings and celebrated on Wednesday, June 5. After a Muslim researcher said the Saudi sighting was "astronomically impossible" , Birmingham Live was contacted by a moon-sighting adviser who has called for a UK board to be set up for establishing dates through scientifically verified moon sightings.

We will have to see if the huge discussion we've generated over more unity on Islamic dates has any impact on the next Eid in the calendar. This festival marks the date when Ibrahim was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, to show his devotion. For those on the Hajj pilgrimage at Mecca, this is the day of the ritual of throwing stones at a pillar representing the devil.

Although dates are determined by an official sighting of the new moon, the lunar calendar gives clues as to when that is expected. Unlike the Eid al-Fitr celebrations, Eid al-Adha is not directly after a moon sighting but comes on the 10th day of the month in this case Dhul Hijjah. The moon sighting that determines the start of that month - thus allowing Eid al-Adha to be worked out - is expected to be on Thursday, August 1, meaning Dhul Hijjah starts on Friday, August 2.

Expected moon visibility for Saudi Arabia, Morocco and the UK will be announced nearer the time, giving us a clear idea of when a verified sighting is expected. Follow David on Facebook here.
